South China University of Technology is a leading public research-intensive university in China, directly governed by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Established in 1952 as the South China Institute of Technology, it originated from the merger of engineering schools and departments across the five provinces. Over the years, it has evolved into a multi-disciplinary institution covering science, engineering, business management, arts, social sciences, and medicine.
With campuses in Guangzhou, including Wushan Campus, University Town Campus, and Guangzhou International Campus, SCUT spans 391 hectares. In 1960, it gained recognition as a National Key University, and in 1981, it became one of the first institutions authorized by the State Council to confer doctoral and master's degrees. In 1988, it was officially renamed the South China University of Technology.
SCUT has played a significant role in national educational initiatives, being part of "Project 211" in 1995 and "Project 985" in 2001. In 2017, it was selected for China's "Double World Class" project as a Category-A University.
